June 12th, 2009 Derecho

Severe weather chances ramp up during the spring months in Arkansas. Once we enter June, we begin to notice a gradual decrease in severe weather activity. However, on June 12th, 2009, severe weather grasped our state with severe weather. A large MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) developed early in the day. This large cluster of storms formed into what is known as a "derecho". This resulted in VERY strong winds along the gust front of this cluster of storms.

In this timeline graphic, you can see the large "derecho" track across Arkansas throughout the day.

Early in the day, this large complex of storms formed in Kansas and Oklahoma. The cluster eventually tracked southeast into Arkansas. Notice the large bow of the storms, this is a signal of very strong winds gusting as the storm "bows" out. It is most prominent across central and eastern sections of Arkansas.

In this graphic, radar data showed 60-80 mph inbound winds.
Damaging winds were a very dangerous aspect of this system. As usual with any line of storms, embedded rotations were observed (as noted in the graphic above). Several tornado warnings were issued during this systems track across Arkansas. While tornado reports were not widespread, one tornado was confirmed (EF-1) near Solgohacia (Conway County).

Storm reports from 6-12-09
As this system tracked across Arkansas, numerous damage reports were observed. Power lines were knocked down, some structural damage was reported and several other hail and wind reports were observed. Notice the widespread wind reports in the graphic above (blue spots).

The system eventually tracked east, out of Arkansas. During the evening hours it eventually weakened after inflicting further wind damage in portions of Mississippi and Alabama. Due to the nature of the system travelling for hundreds of miles and causing extensive damage, it can be classified as a "progressive derecho".

We would like to thank the Storm Prediction Center and National Weather Service (Little Rock) for supplying this information and graphics. Without them, this blog would not be possible. We hope you enjoyed the information.
