February 8th-9th Winter Storm (2010)

Who else remembers the winter of 2010? Snow lovers were in a constant state of euphoria as we saw large snowfalls and record setting cold. On February 8th through the 9th, an upper level storm system moved across Oklahoma and Arkansas. Arctic air flushed south, giving way to a major winter storm. The cold air and snow was relentless throughout January and February. With average temperatures remaining in the low 30's for much of northern Arkansas.

Some of the heaviest snowfall fell across northern Arkansas, especially in portions of north central Arkansas with Newport seeing 11 inches of snow! Other notables areas were Kingston and Gilbert where they saw 10 inches, Cabot and the Greers Ferry community saw 9 inches respectively. Winter Storm Warnings were broadcast over a clear majority of the northern half of Arkansas. Roads and travel conditions were slick and extremely hazardous with school closings for a couple of days.

After the snow had moved on it left behind crippling cold for much of the northern half of the state. Some areas saw temperatures well below zero, Fayetteville dropped to a bone chilling -18 degrees due to the heavy snow pack. The following year, in 2011, Arkansas experienced another major snow storm dumping nearly two feet of snow across parts of NWA. You may ask the question, will we ever experience this type of snow again? Only time will tell.
